William & Gloria Brame Different Loving : A Complete Exploration of The World of Sexual Dominance and Submission |
![]() |
|
In my 20s, I had trouble accepting my kinkster ways. I kept thinking that continued exploration of BDSM would surely compromise my psychological health or my feminist ideals. Luckily, Different Loving came along. The authors make their book accessible by allowing their intelligent, diverse, and clearly sane interviewees to take center stage. Reading what these people had to say made it easy to start counting myself as a member of this big, complex tribe. Yee haw. |

Loraine Hutchins and Lani Kaahumanu, eds. Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out |
![]() |
|
It took another decade, some unfortunate experiences, and a copy of this book to make me realize how important it is to speak out about being bi. By hiding in mainstream society, monogamous and balanced bi folks rob themselves of opportunities and their less conservative brethren of legitimacy. We need to get together and get real. |

Novels:

Laura Antoniou The Marketplace Series Folks, there are reasons this book and its sequels are so highly recommended. Without going into (ahem) slavish detail let's just say that her characters and her universe are so detailed, that it makes the smut about five orders of magnitude hotter. Laura, we love you.

Nicholson Baker Vox A book of erotica written entirely as a dialogue between two people on the phone? You'd better believe it. This book takes erotica to the next level. But this is only if you're prepared to possibly forego the beat-off session. This book is here because the writing is exquisite. The sex is actually fairly tame. |

Michael Manning The Spider Garden This is a graphic novel I come back to again and again. It could be because the new details of the outstandingly complex and inventive art are revealed each time. Or that the twists of the plot invite new avenues of thought. Then again, it could also be that I'm a giant perv and Michael Manning knows exactly how to push my buttons. Be sure to check out the sequels to this excellent book.

Short Stories:
|
Lauren P. Burka "The Specialist" |
This is the single best piece of sci-fi kink ever written. My only complaint is that it's not a novel. |
|
Cecilia Tan "Telepaths Don't Need Safewords" |
Same as above, except instead of kinky sci-fi, it's kinky fantasy, which, to the discerning geek, is a whole 'nother story. |
|
Mary Anne Mohanraj "And Baby Makes Four" |
This is a sweet, humanistic piece about being bi and poly and making it work. Gives me the warm fuzzies and the hot tamales. |
|
Pat Califia "Unsafe Sex" |
By turns sexy, scary, and thigh-slappingly funny, this story about gay men getting what they really want seems too spot-on to have been written by a dyke. But that's the genius of Califia. |
|
M. Christian "Hackwork" |
Ever wish for dark, dystopian porn that reads like the screenplay for Blade Runner? Here it is, folks: complete with cops, criminals, wetware, rundown locations, and lots of steamy sex. |
|
Simon Sheppard "Number 14" |
The Queer As Folk writers might have gotten
some inspiration from this short about men and the comic book
heroes they adore. Hot and funny with a great ending.
